Pair of 7s vs 7 in Blackjack: Split

Enter your cards and the dealer's card: the calculator shows the best move and what every option is worth, for twelve blackjack games.

What should I do with Pair of 7s vs Dealer 7?

Optimal Play: Split

When you have Pair of 7s and the dealer shows 7, the mathematically optimal play according to basic strategy is to split. This means you should split your pair into two separate hands.

Why Split?

Splitting creates two hands that each have better expected values than playing the pair together. Against dealer 7, splitting gives you the best mathematical expectation.

Expected Value

Splitting creates two hands that each have better expected values than playing the pair as a single hand.

Alternative Actions

Alternative actions for this hand against other dealer cards include: Hit. However, against a 7, split is optimal.

How to Use the Blackjack Calculator

  1. Tap your cards

Tap the cards in your hand on the card pad: two to start with, more if you have already hit. Tap a card in your hand to remove it.

  2. Tap the dealer's card

Pick the dealer's face-up card. In Double Exposure both dealer cards are face up, so you pick both; in Pontoon and Chinese Blackjack you pick none.

  3. Choose the game

American Blackjack is the default. Switch to European, Atlantic City, Vegas Strip, Single Deck, Spanish 21 or any of the other games: the answer follows that game's rules.

  4. Calculate

You get the best move, what to do if it is not allowed at your table, and the value of every option per 100 chips bet.

Every option is worked out from the game's real rules, so you see how much better the best move is.

The reason why

For standard hands it explains the basic strategy play in plain English, and links to the full chart.

Basic Strategy in One Paragraph

Basic strategy is the mathematically best way to play every hand: for each of your hands against each dealer card, there is one play that wins the most (or loses the least) in the long run. Played perfectly it cuts the house edge to about half a percent at a good table. This calculator gives that play for any hand; the standard explanation is for 6 decks, dealer hits soft 17, double on any two cards, double after split allowed, late surrender. See the full basic strategy chart, learn the reasoning in the basic strategy guide, or drill it in the strategy trainer.

Action Abbreviations

Blackjack Calculator FAQ

How does the blackjack calculator work?

For your exact cards and the dealer's card it works out the average result of every move the rules allow — hit, stand, double, split, surrender — over every card that can come next, and shows the move that wins the most in the long run. That is how basic strategy itself is calculated.

Is the calculator the same as a basic strategy chart?

For two-card hands in the standard game it gives the same answer as the chart. It also handles what a chart cannot: hands of three or more cards, where doubling and surrender are gone, and the different rules of Spanish 21, Double Exposure, Pontoon and the other games.

What do the numbers next to each move mean?

They are the average result per 100 chips bet. +20 means you win 20 chips for every 100 bet in the long run; -54 means you lose 54. A hand like 16 against a 10 is a losing hand whatever you do, so the best move is simply the one that loses least.

Does it work for Spanish 21, European blackjack and other games?

Yes. Choose the game and the answer follows its rules: no hole card in European blackjack, no 10s and bonuses in Spanish 21, both dealer cards face up in Double Exposure, the 16 minimum in Pontoon, and so on.

Can I use a blackjack calculator in a casino?

Most casinos let you use a printed basic strategy card at the table, but using a phone or any device while playing is usually not allowed. Use the calculator to learn and check hands, then practise in the strategy trainer until you know the plays by heart.

Is this a card counting calculator?

No — it gives the best play from the cards you enter, assuming a full shoe. To learn counting, use the card counting trainer: it keeps the running and true count for you and checks yours.
